History was made on August 18 & 19, 2006, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee as the First Annual Tennessee Power Showcase was held at Siegel High School.
Thirty of the top high players from around the state participated in the spectacular two day event. The competition was tight on the first day as everyone was a little nervous, admitted finalist Travis Garcia of Ravenwood High School. However, according to Garcia, as soon as the competitors felt the sweet feeling of hitting their first home run, the “nerves went away and baseballs started flying out of the park. Highlighted by Garcia’s 12 homers in the first round (a state record for most home runs in a single round) and eventual State Champion Ryan Keylon‘s titanic 498 ft. blast, the first round was filled with excitement. In response to being asked what it felt like to hit a ball almost 500 ft., Keylon, of Sale Creek High School, responded :the best feeling in the world”/

Round 2 proved to be just as thrilling as 3 competitors Zach Howell of Science Hill High School , Tyler Raines of Morristown Hamblen West, and Travis Garcia went into a sudden death round to determine the last finalist. Given only 3 outs neither Howell nor Raines were able to hit a home run, but Garcia, down to his last out, connected on a walk-off blast to put him in the finals and simultaneously lift the world off [his] shoulders. Despite Garcia’s heroics, no one could stop the big kid from Sale Creek. The 6’4 200 lbs. Keylon smoked 5 home runs in the finals and was crowned Tennessee’s first Power Showcase State Champion. Even though the other finalists were disappointed, they enjoyed themselves because as Keylon appropriately put it, “everyone wanted to win, but it just came down to having fun.”
