Jupiter Christian’s Matt Greener placed second in the 2005 Florida Power Showcase Home Run Derby hitting 7 home runs in the Championship Round. Instead it was Riann Spanjer-Furstenburg, who finished sixth behind Jones last weekend with 17 homeruns, stealing the spotlight from Starkey and Jones. Furstenburg hit four in the second round to advance into a three-out playoff with three other players: Sean Ochinko, Stoneman Douglas, (Parkland) Jeremy Harrel, Fort White (Fort White) andÂRobbie Shields Pasco (Dade City). Furstenburg advanced into the finals with Trinity Christian’s Ryan Durrence, Park Vista’s Justin Dalles, Jupiter Christian’s Matt Greener and Bishop Verot’s Darrin Jones
In the finals, Furstenburg nailed nine homeruns to claim the title and was named 2005 Central Florida Power Showcase Home Run Derby State Champion
Greener finished second after hitting seven in the final round, while also claiming the award for most homeruns hit in the derby-a combined 31 over the last two weeks. Jones finished third with three home runs, while claiming three awards for South Regional champion, longest home run (498 feet) and most consecutive home runs with five. Durrence, who finished fourth last weekend in Jacksonville with 17 home runs, tied with Dalles for fifth after hitting two in the finals. Dalles, who finished fifth tied for twelfth last week in Davie Nova with 10 home runs, advanced to the finals after hitting six in the first round and two in the second round. Fort Walton Beach’s Joseph Carlee, who finished second last week behind Starkey with 17 home runs, failed to get out of the first round after hitting zero home runs.
