“I knew it was going to be a first-pitch fastball, so I just sat back and it was there,” said Fontenot. “I got lucky a little bit. But it was one of those hits where as soon as you hit it you know it’s a shot; you know you’re getting stuff done. It felt great to pull my weight.”

Fontenot went 2-for-2 on the evening, and Texas star Henry Hausman was also 2-for-2 to represent the only other West player with multiple hits.

Hausman belted an RBI double in the fifth that drove home Utah’s Braxton Ipson to put the West up 2-0. They got on the board when Illinois product Simeon Lucas drove a pitch to opposite field for a two-out triple, and then scored on an infield error following a walk to Ipson. Lucas also scored in the ninth after he walked and came home on an RBI double from Ipson. Hausman followed with an RBI single on a liner to right field that scored Illinois pinch-runner Evan Skoug.

Tennessee’s David Pimentel closed out the scoring when he connected for a solid drive that rose high and deep over the left field wall for a solo home run in the top of the tenth. Pimentel earned Offensive MVP honors, after being the only player from all three games to hit a home run.

Jake Crain of Texas earned the victory for the West, tossing 36 pitches through two-and-a-third innings of scoreless work. The right-hander struck out five and walked one batter. Hausman picked up the save with a scoreless tenth inning.

The East was able to pull within 6-4 in the bottom of the ninth. Florida’s Jarren Pinkney blasted a shot to right field and raced all the way around the bases for a standup triple, then scored on a sacrifice flyout from Georgia’s Michael Chavis. Pinkney also scored in the fifth, after reaching on a fielder’s choice and scoring on an RBI single from Alabama’s John Thomas Pietrantoni. Pietrantoni reached base all three trips to the plate, drawing a pair of walks and stealing a base on the day.

The East took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the second. Chavis reached on an error that allowed Mississippi’s Trace Hamby to score, and Georgia’s Will Campbell was hit by a pitch to push across Maryland’s Andrew Sharpe.

The game’s conclusion also brought about an end to a very exciting four-day event that left a lasting impression on everyone involved. After relishing the great environment at MarlinsPark with fellow baseball enthusiasts from all over the world, the players each left invigorated with passion for the game they love.

“This was hands-down the best experience of my life,” said Fontenot. “I met a bunch of new people from all over the world that enjoy the same thing I do, that have the same exact passion that I do. It was great to learn new things about new people and I hope I can keep in touch with my new friends and maybe meet up with them again sometime in the future. If not, I still get to watch them do big things, because there are a lot of guys here with big talent.”
