One look at Dennis Mitchell is all you need to imagine 450’+ bombs. And you’d be right! Dennis has been hitting jaw dropping HR’s since he was winning home run derby contests in Cooperstown as a little leaguer. Now he’s a young man and at 6’3/230 lbs he has the physique of the classic home run hitter. All summer long Dennis led his NorCal East team in many offensive categories, including a surprising team high batting average. What isn’t surprising is he lead his #20 Perfect Game ranked team in HR’s. “Dennis took his first round of BP with me last May and all I said was “This is going to be a fun summer watching this kid hit”, said a smiling NorCal East coach, Mark Helsel “His bat speed is at a completely different level from the other players on our team, and we had 11 players get DI scholarships off this summer’s team”. Helsel said they are still talking about some of Dennis’ bombs. “He’s one of those players that when he comes up to bat everyone stops talking and just watches. Everyone knows that the next swing could produce a towering shot. He hit a HR off a 94 mph fastball when we played at the 17U WWBA in GA that might still be going. The very next at bat he hit a ball 101 mph in the gap for a double. People pay money to see hitters like Dennis”. But for all he is on the field, he’s equally impressive off the field. “Let’s face it, when you see a kid 6’3/230 lbs and all muscle it can be very intimidating. But Dennis is a very fun loving, light hearted kid. I think because of his stature he’s learned to put people at ease with his charm. He’ll light up a room with his smile and charisma. Besides being a very mature kid he’s also intelligent and unusually articulate. Talking to him is like talking to another coach. But the biggest surprise to me about Dennis was his sense of humor. He’s probably the funniest kid on our team. I overheard him telling a player on another team this summer that his best sport was tennis. That’s just the kind of fun loving kid he is”. – Mark Helsel
