Mr. Otero has over 22 years of baseball coaching experience at the high school and college level. Mr. Otero has coached at various prestigious programs such as at Westminster Christian High School where he was part of the coaching staff who won the 1996 State & National Championship. The team had a 36-0 record and in 1997, the team won back-to-back State Championships. While at Westminster Coach “ Flaco “ had the opportunity in coaching numerous All Americans that eventually went on to play Major Division One College Baseball and Professional Baseball.

He has also coached at Miami Beach Senior High from 2000 – 2004 in which as an Assistant those Teams in 2001 & 2002 made it to the Regional Playoffs. He has also coached at Miami Southwest Senior High School from 2005 – 2008 and previously had been coaching at Mater Academy Middle / High School from 2009 – 2013 where he helped orchestrate the team’s first district title and finished with the schools best record with a 26-4 record as the team advanced to the Regional semifinal.

While at Mater Academy, Coach “Flaco“ (as he is known in the baseball community) helped and mentored great young players such as the Chicago Cubs 6th overall pick the 2012 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, Albert Almora who scored the go ahead run in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series and Willie Abreu who was a 2 Time 1st Team All Dade Performer and an All – American at the University of Miami and was chosen in the 6th Round of the MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies. While at Mater Academy he was also able to tutor and mentor University of Miami’s Ace LHP Mike Mediavilla who was also a First Team All Dade Selection and a College Pre-Season All-American.

During Summer Break, Coach “Flaco “spends all of his time working at the baseball camps at The University of Miami. He has worked those camps for 21 years. Coach Otero also travels with his SLAM Baseball Team to Participate in the 4 Major High School and Underclassmen Tournaments such as the Perfect Game in Ft. Myers, Florida. The Prospect Select Tournament held in Palm Beach, Florida. The USA Team National Tournaments which are held in Jupiter, Florida and the Under Armour Firecracker Invitational which is also held in Jupiter, Florida at the Marlins /Cardinals Roger Dean Stadium Baseball Complex. He has also mentored several young players through their High School years. Mr. Otero was also the Middle School FBLA Co-Ad-visor and participated in most of the FBLA events.

While at SLAM since 2013 – 2017, he has participated in the Marlins Ayudan Program which serves our players and students in mentoring them and preparing them to acquire Business like skills in one day obtaining jobs so that they are able to work for a professional team or organization.

Coach Otero also is in charge and participates in the Mentoring Program in which the Miami Heat offers to our students in school and with the mentoring Program from Carnival Cruise Lines.

He also volunteers his time to the American Cancer Society and “La Liga Contra el Cancer” being that he is a Stage 4 going on Stage 5 Stomach Cancer Survivor. In 2011 he was the Guest Speaker / Motivational Speaker for the IMG Miami Marathon and Half Marathon. Mr. Otero dedicates his time and efforts to helping out the community in every way he can.

One of Coach Otero’s closest friends is former Major Leaguer and 14-year Major League veteran and 2 Time All–American and two-time All-College World Series Selection Alex Cora. Cora also won a World Series Championship in 2007 with the Boston Red Sox. Cora was one of the hosts for the popular television show “Baseball Tonight“on ESPN. He accepted a job as The Houston Astros Bench Coach for the 2017 Season. Cora was also the General Manager of his hometown Winter League Baseball Team, the Caguas Criollos. Cora also played on BOTH World Baseball Classic Teams from his native country Puerto Rico. He played on the 2005 & 2009 Teams. He will be an Assistant and the Bench Coach in this year’s 2017 WBC Puerto Rico Team. Currently the 47th Manager in the history for The Boston Red Sox. 2018 – Present.

In his 1st Season as the head coach at SLAM Academy, Coach “Flaco “promptly guided his team to a 23 -7 record. His team won the HSBN Spring Break Tournament. SLAM Varsity Baseball also won their first ever district title in their 1st Year of Eligibility that they could compete in post season play.

SLAM Baseball Team was able to get key victories over South Dade and then-defending state champions Mater Academy.

In his 2nd Season as the Head Coach at SLAM Academy, Coach “Flaco “promptly guided his team to a 20-10 record. His team was able to capture another District Title in a thrilling 9 innings extra inning 5-3 win over Calvary Christian Academy. Coach Otero was also able to defeat the Defending State Champion Westminster Christian in a thrilling 2-1 victory which propelled SLAM to their first ever Regional Final in which eventually their season would end with a 6-5 gut wrenching loss to Calvary Christian who would eventually go on to win the State Championship.

Towards the end of the school year Coach Otero was selected as the Head Coach to coach the South Team in the 39th Annual FACA High School Senior All-Star Game which was held in Sebring, Florida. This game featured the BEST High School Seniors around the State of Florida from the 2016 Season. From that game and the players who were there, there were about 25 – 30 players drafted between the 1st – 10th rounds. It was an unbelievable experience to be around great young talent and also to be associated with the FACA which stands for the Florida Athletic Coaches Association and with the City of Sebring, Florida for a great event. Coach Otero has also worked in the 2016 International POWER SHOWCASE Home Run Derby in which ALL of the BEST Potential Home run Hitters have the ability to showcase their Home run Hitting Skills at Marlins Park. Below, is the link of the International Power Showcase.

Coach Otero has a quality coaching staff dedicated in educating these young baseball players and will continue to groom them both on and off the field as they hopefully one day aspire to play college baseball and be prepared for taking on tasks in the real world.
