TX Zeke Bear with David Gonzalez for Home Runs that Help Zeke has partnered with David Gonzalez for Home Runs that Help
David Gonzalez is an amazing young man. He was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 6. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in every 3,500 live male births (about 20,000 new cases each year). Because the Duchenne gene is found on the X-chromosome, it primarily affects boys; however, it occurs across all races and cultures.David always wanted to be involved in everything including decisions in regards to his health. Knowing the side effects of DMD he decided to join the football team his freshman year at Waller High School and joined the Houston Fireballs(a power wheelchair soccer team). In 2010 David become the first kid to score a touchdown from a power wheelchair (youtube http://youtu.be/0Y9cQRdvNTA) in the state of Texas. David was part of the football team that entire season and was invited by coach David Bailiff head coach of the Rice Owls as honorary team captain for his incredible accomplishment. He did not miss a practice or a game. At the same time he raised awareness and taught the football team a valuable lesson about life. He was also invited by Cy-Ranch High School to speak to their football team as well. The following year he joined the AFJROTC at Waller and was awarded with the Military Order Of The Purple Heart for his excellent skills in leadership and academics. That same year David was made team captain of the Varsity football team. Once a year during football season David participates in a fund raiser to raise awareness and funds for coachtocuremd.org . He also presented the Flag at the beginning of the football game that was attached to his wheelchair as part of the color guard. He did all of this while maintaining a grade point average of 4.50 and continued to be a presence in the junior varsity football team. Later on that year David and the AFJROTC academics team qualified to go to Washington D.C. to compete against the top JROTC schools in the nation. David and the Waller AFJROTC came back from the competition 9th best in the nation. Now you must know that David has lost most of his ability to move and during the competition all of the students were writing out the math problems. David and the team received recognition from General Colin Powell(retired) and U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. His junior year at Waller began with AFJROTC(cadet first lieutenant), color guard, football, coachtocure(raising more than $3,000),theater arts(2plays), a member of the FCA, accepted as an officer in the National Honor Society , U.I.L. Academics in mathematics, 5 AP classes and is number 5 out of his 2014 class. David has been accepted into The University of St. Thomas and received a 56,000 thousand dollar scholarship. David will study theology. Google David Gonzalez Duchenne muscular dystrophy. If you would like to donate to coachtocuremd.org text the word “cure to 90999” for a $5.00 donation.
