Nate is a very fun loving young man. He’s the type of guy that his teammates love to be around. Nathan comes from a very good family that all love to support him and his team. Even with all of the attention that has come his way over the last several months Nate has not changed. He’s still the same good kid who loves to joke and mess around with his teammates. On the field Nate is a competitor, he hates to lose even more than he likes to win. He is always working hard and pushing the envelope to try not only to make himself better, but his team as well. While his size is intimidating to many opponents he is a big teddy bear off the field. A very lovable kid, his teachers and administrators have nothing but good things to say about him.

Nathan is a great kid and we are proud to have him represent DeLand High School and his city.

Nathan has partnered with Navin Otway  for Home Runs that Help

Navin Otway an active 9 year old boy with Severe Hemophilia A. Hemophilia A (Factor 8 Deficiency) is a life- threatening bleeding disorder in which a person’s blood does not clot normally. If you have hemophilia you will not bleed faster than normal, but your disorder makes you bleed longer after an injury. You may also have spontaneous bleeding, which means you may bleed internally for no reason at all. People with hemophilia are born with the disorder and will have it all of their lives. There are 3 types of Hemophilia A: Mild, Moderate, and Severe.

There is currently no cure, and hemophilia is treated by replacing the protein that is missing in the blood. The only treatment for hemophilia is factor replacement therapy. Hemophilia is treated by injecting the missing factor protein into the vein. The injection makes the factor immediately available in the bloodstream and the body is able to activate it to continue the clotting cascade and stop the bleeding. Because Navin needs to be medicated at least twice a week, he has a port in his chest for infusions and is currently learning to self-infuse by sticking himself in a vein. The average cost of routine treatment for a hemophiliac is $250,000 a year. But Navin also has a spontaneous inhibitor, which means that sometimes his factor replacement doesn’t work. Treatment during these episodes can rise as high as $500,000 for factor replacement and $1,000,000 to treat the inhibitor.

If you ask Navin what his main concern about having hemophilia is, he will tell you it is that he can’t play contact sports. Even regular play can cause bleeding and painful swelling in the ankles, knees, and elbows. His port also limits activities like climbing and swimming. The family’s everyday fear is the chance of a spontaneous bleed. Every headache or minor complaint of not feeling well must be acted upon immediately and often leads to Emergent Care.
