Quentin Holmes is an outstanding young man who commands respect on and off the field. He is a respectful individual who always conducts himself with class.  Quentin is an honor student who takes academics as seriously as baseball. He is a quiet person who is always looking to help others. He is a great teammate and is very easy to coach. Accountability, respect, and moral character come to my mind when I think of Quentin. He is by far the most mature 15 year old I have ever met. I think Quentin makes every player on the team work harder because they see how hard he works. It is safe to say that Quentin understands fully what the term student-athlete means. It is an honor and my privilege to be his coach and to watch him develop as a player, but more importantly as a caring and respectful person.

Quentin has partnered with Mathew Miller for Home Runs that Help

Mathew is a 15-year-old sophomore who attends Benjamin Cardozo High School in Queens. Mathew and I played together at Elmjack Little League Baseball, and on his summer travel team, the “CP Stars.” My fundraising will help Mathew with ongoing medical expenses due to a tragedy he experienced on New Year’s Day, 2014.

In the early morning hours, a quick moving fire tore through Mathew’s family home.  While attempting to escape, he suffered second and third degree burns over 65% of his body.  He also tried to save his 7-year-old brother; he did not succeed. Having a brother of my own, I can’t even imagine how that felt. What I have learned by watching Mathew is that family, friends and faith will get you through anything.

If you met Mathew, you wouldn’t feel shame or sorrow for him; you would feel joy. He has remained positive and has miraculously returned to doing what makes him happiest – playing baseball.

Having endured pain, sorrow, happiness, love and a great deal of nurturing over the past two years, Mathew still has a long healing process ahead of him. He spent eighteen months in hospitals, endured extensive mental and physical rehabilitation, and will need treatment for his skin for years to come.

By the way, Mathew made the Varsity baseball team this year. I am truly proud of him!
