My name is Peter Gilardo. I played professionally for 3 years in the Red Sox organization and have been running our Rock Solid program for several years.

Austin has grown a lot through our program in recent seasons.  He packs a lot of power for his size and has become a top notch center fielder who can go get the baseball.  He has shown great improvement on his infield work, in regards to his glove and footwork.  On the bases he is aggressive and is always looking to take the next bag.

At the plate, Austin can swing it.  He can drive the ball to all fields and knows when to shorten up with two strikes.  Last season as an 11u playing 12u at Cooperstown he hit 11 home runs during the week.  Don’t let his size fool you, he can deliver at the plate as well as anyone his age.  We like how he trusts his hands and isn’t afraid to drive the ball to all fields.

Austin has always played up in age level during his Rock Solid career.  In doing this he has learned how to rise to the occasion and compete with some very good players.  Now that he is playing at his age level, he is starting to grow into more of a leader on the field.  He is a great kid that loves to compete.

Peter Gilardo/ Rock Solid Coach and Coordinator

Big things come in small packages.  When I contacted Austin’s dad, my goal was to convince him that Austin’s older brother, Tommy, should play for the Evoshield Canes.  When Mr. Hawke said that Tommy had a younger brother, I agreed to give him a look.  What I saw was an undersized kid, a big smile, and a potential batboy.   I thought that if we ever used him we would try hiding him somewhere in the field and hit him last.

It took one at bat to see that we needed to recruit a new batboy, because Austin Hawke is special.  Austin generates as much power from his hips as any young hitter I have seen.  Although Austin played up for us, we felt comfortable hitting him anywhere in the lineup.  Austin started the year hitting in the bottom of our line up.  After one weekend he ended up hitting lead off and middle of the order.  He proved size does not matter.

Austin’s plate discipline is amazing.  Hitting is easier when you swing at good pitches.  Austin always seemingly gets a good pitch to hit because he does not swing at bad pitches.

I will close by sharing my two favorite Austin Hawke moments. The first came in the TravelBall Select National Championships in East Cobb, Georgia when 11 year old Austin was hitting against one of the nation’s best 12 year old pitchers.  He fearlessly turned on a pitch that almost left the park on the 250-foot elevated centerfield fence.  No one, except those who knew Austin, could believe he hit a ball that far.

My favorite Austin Hawke moment was when we faced the number one seeded team’s flame throwing ace who was almost twice Austin’s size.  Austin hit a towering home run so far that it literally brought the opposing pitcher to tears.  He chased a pitcher who had dominated us and every other team he faced, out of the game.  That blast led us to winning the championship.

Speed, defense, good arm, high average, power, plate discipline, high baseball IQ and above all the heart and soul of a cold-blooded giant slayer. Austin Hawke always knows what to do, how to do it, and refuses limitations. He quietly and forcefully does what it takes.

An opponent’s worst nightmare. A coach’s dream. That’s Austin Hawke.

Austin has partnered with The Jevanie Green Fund for Home Runs that Help

Jevanie Green, a South Brunswick Middle-schooler, was walking home from the fireworks show at the 4th of July Festival in Southport, North Carolina when he was hit by an impaired driver.  Jevanie sustained multiple injuries with severe head trauma and was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he remained in a coma for three (3) weeks.  Following six (6) weeks in Intensive Care, he was transferred to a rehabilitation center where he continues to make slow but steady progress.

Foreseeing a lengthy rehabilitation process, the Jevanie Green Fund was set up by Power Walking Ministries, Inc. to ensure that the financial realities associated with Jevanie’s recovery are met throughout his arduous journey.  Our local community has responded with unbelievable passion and focus to support the Jevanie Green Fund.  The Power Showcase event brings more attention to this fund and Jevanie’s fight.

Austin attended elementary school with Jevanie Green and participated on the same Project Fitness Field Day Teams.  In Austin’s own words at the time “he is the fastest kid in the school – and always smiling”.  Today, he is the toughest kid in our community.

Donations can be made out to Power Walking Ministries, Inc. / Jevanie Green Fund.
