IN LOVING MEMORY OF

Over the last several years, I have had the opportunity to work directly with Brody on the field of play. As the Frozen Ropes Rockies Travel team Head Coach, I stress what baseball teaches us about life and leadership. Every coach looks for leadership, a player who takes initiative, is a good communicator, a motivator, a player others respect and most importantly a teammate who rallies his team when the odds are stacked against them. Leadership isn’t a trait that is taught or coached, it comes from within and natural leaders attract followers.

Brody, is just that; a player who embodies leadership. This role simply wasn’t given to Brody. This is a role he took upon himself through the merit of his play and leading by example.

The qualities that define Brody as a leader:

1.) Shows everybody else how excited and enthusiastic he is about whatever it is he is trying to accomplish whether it’s about baseball, school or his daily life.

2.) Leads by example – generates trust and respect from his teammates, but most importantly is able to give it back.

3.) Cultivates relationships – supports his teammates, communicates, knows the game and fosters teamwork by helping to create a winning culture. He’ll take it upon himself to call a timeout to settle his teammate or provide words of inspiration.

4.) Understands failure – the question isn’t whether or not we’ll fail; it’s how we’ll deal with it when it happens. Brody understands this concept very well and will lead his team in late inning rallies whether it’s through chants or coming up big at the plate. He’ll be the first player to tell you to shake it off because you’ll get another opportunity.

5.) Getting ahead – it is so important to get ahead in everything we do. Brody is a starting pitcher and bats fourth in our lineup. These are two very important roles he plays for this team.

I started off by saying that I have the opportunity to work directly with Brody, but really it’s been an honor to have such an opportunity to coach this talented young man. Over the past several years he has helped me to become a better coach through his leadership.

(Adaptive Sports for Children with Disabilities)

You Are Beautiful People is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization founded in 2006 by Peter Ladka. Our mission is to build bridges between children with disabilities and their families and the broader community of Orange County, NY by providing adaptive sports programs for ages 5 and up. We are proud to be a resource to see that those with special needs have the chance just as their mainstream peers do to socialize, exercise, and enjoy the benefits of team sports. (DBA Beautiful People) www.beautiful-people.us

Our first program was baseball, as the Orange County NY chapter of Miracle League, with spring and falls seasons that began in 2007. Miracle League is a national entity with 220 chapters. Each player is paired with an adult or teen ‘buddy’ volunteer to help as needed to bat, round the bases, and field the ball. 150 players in ten teams come together and 80-100 volunteers assisted. We have been hosted by the Town of Wallkill Little League Park on their fields in Middletown, NY on Sundays May and June, and some years, Sept and October.

A fully accessible, safe-surface ball park has been a goal of Beautiful People so that those with physical challenges and mobility aides can safely participate. This year we celebrate this dream becoming a reality. Our 10-member Task Force, reporting to our board, has been in place five years and is now overseeing development. We will be expanding the recreation area at the former Mid-Orange Correctional facility, now a new Town Park in Warwick called Wickham Woodlands.
