I have had the pleasure of being Josh Lord Jr’s coach and baseball instructor for the past 2 years. From the first time I worked with Josh he has shown me great respect and is one of the most coachable young athletes I have ever been around. He consistently shows a great attitude towards working hard to reach his goals and exemplifies what a true dreamer and doer is on the field.

I have also had the opportunity to get to know Josh off the field. Just the same he has been a great example of how young men should behave. In respect to his mentors and his peers he is always a leader both vocally and by example.

Joshua has partnered with Declan Sanchez for Home Runs that Help

Declan has been one of Josh’s good friends for 4 years. Declan is 14 years old and is in the 9th grade. Josh and Declan met playing baseball together and became friends instantly. Declan was a very talented baseball player growing up always playing for the top teams in his age group.

Growing up Declan had recurring migraine headaches that were so horribly painful he would have to lay in a completely dark room for a while to relieve them. The doctors told Declan’s parents that these migraines were caused by allergies and gave him allergy medication that seemed to help the majority of the time, although occasionally the migraines would return but not as frequent. This went on for a number of years, all the while the doctors thinking allergies were the cause. One day Declan had one of his migraines that just would not go away and lasted overly long so his parents took him to the hospital emergency room. A CT scan showed something much different than an allergy problem. Declan actually had a large tumor growing on and around his brain stem. He was immediately admitted to Florida Hospital for Children and on his 12th birthday they did surgery to remove the tumor. As a result of the extensive surgery required to remove the tumor, Declan had to stay in the hospital for 2 months to recover. They would need to put in a shunt to relieve the pressure that was causing dizziness, etc. After being released from the children’s hospital Declan was sent to a physical therapy center in Jacksonville where he would spend another 2 months relearning how to do the things a lot of us take for granted, such as walking and talking.

Today Declan is doing much better, however do to the surgery and the shunt and other complications, he is no longer able to play the sport he loves of baseball.
