The First Annual South Florida “Power Showcase” Home Run Derby was held at Olympic Heights High School in Boca Raton, Florida. Many magical moments took place on
Saturday, January 17 and Wednesday, January 21, 2004.



68 players from 26 different high schools came out to showcase their power for 20 different major league organizations, as well as college programs.
Vinnie Scarduzio from Jupiter hit 23 home runs in the first round, one traveling as far as 475 feet.

Tony Cruz from Santaluces H.S. hit 7 consecutive home runs.

Jacob Smith from Jupiter Christian hit 8 home runs from the right side of the plate, then turned around and hit 3 more, batting left-handed.

Darryl Clark, a sophomore from Miami Norland called his shot, pointing out towards centerfield and delivering the next pitch 425 ft. into the centerfield trees.

South Florida’s 2004 “Power Showcase” Home Run Derby Champion, Brian Van Kirk from Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale, hit 18 home runs in the first round, 5 in the second round, and then, exploding for 15 in the championship round.

He outlasted his teammate, Elih Villanueva, who put on a show, hitting 9 in the final round, finishing second in the event.

South Florida’s 2004 “Power Showcase” Home Run Derby Champion, Brian Van Kirk, Westminster Academy, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox. He signed with Miami Dade Community College. Van Kirk holds the record for total home runs with 38.

Tony Cruz, Santaluces High School, signed with Okaloosa Community College. Cruz holds the record for most consecutive home runs with 7. He was drafted in 2005 by the Los Angeles Dodges.

Colby Coates, Wellington High School, signed with Stetson University. Coates was named Palm Beach County Player of the Year 2004. He finished fourth in the final round.

Elih Villanueva, Westminster Academy, signed with Florida International University. He finished second in the event.

Vinnie Scarduzio from Jupiter hit 23 home runs in the first round, one traveling as far as 475 feet.

Scarduzio was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 2004.
He signed with Broward Community College. He was drafted again in 2005 by the Los Angeles Angels.
He holds the record for most home runs
in a round with 23.
