Athletes are identified by their unique gifts and talents! Their abilities far out way who they really are in the eyes of others as spectators classify them as fast, strong, powerful, electric, etc. As for Brent Rooker, there is only one phrase that could ever be used to describe his character: Christ-like.While most athletes use sports for self-edification or praise, Brent uses his great abilities and gifts in baseball to honor the Lord Jesus Christ. He honors the Lord both in word and deed on the baseball field in two ways:1. In word, Brent will lead his team in prayer before every game. He prays for the safety of both teams, for his team’s attitude and effort to please God, and for God to reveal himself to the team. His purpose is to bring Christ to the field, so God will get the glory for his team’s willingness to do their best.Indeed, Brent is very bold for the Lord. Every time he walks to bat, he will draw a cross in the batters box. He draws a cross in the box to thank the Lord for the opportunity to hit for Him. His prayer is that someone will ask him what he is doing before he hits, and he will be able to say that he wants to take God to the plate with him.Brent has a lot to be thankful for in his baseball career. He has won a State Championship, been elected to play for the Atlanta Braves scout team, chosen to play elite summer baseball with East Coast Grays, and many other various honors and awards. He does not put these accomplishments on his sleeve like a badge of honor that will define who he is. He aspires for his identity to reflect his love for the Lord, and it does! As Brent’s summer league coach, I had the privilege of talking to schools about his play and ability. While I could have led with his great power at the plate, his 6-5 size, his bat speed, or his ability to be a big time player, I always led with Brent Rooker is a young man of God, who by the way is an excellent baseball player. I was proud and honored to have Brent play for me, but I am more proud of his decision to follow Christ so one day we will get to spend eternity in heaven together. Thanks for this opportunity to share how God is using a great young man like Brent Rooker and God Bless, – Coach Joe Caruso; Romans 8:28
