GAME 3 PS ALL-AMERICAN CLASSIC

WEST BEATS EAST 6-2 IN LOADED ALL-AMERICAN CLASSIC

PHOENIX, AZ- The nightcap was clearly the strongest matchup, with most of the event’s best seniors comprising the East and West teams.  The West held on to a 6-2 victory in a 10-inning affair.

David Graybill (Brophy Prep HS, AZ) started for the West, a big-bodied 6’4”, 230 lb righty.  Committed to Arizona State with two-way potential, Graybill will get lots of pro attention this spring and has a chance to be an early draft.  Graybill has a very athletic delivery, despite his size, and threw mostly in the high-80s with good command of the lower strike zone.  His mid-70s curve was inconsistent, but he has the right slot and spin to make it a good one in the future.

Chris Chinea (Gulliver Prep HS, FL) from the East squad managed to hit two triples against Graybill and get stranded both times.  The first was to the right-center field wall in the first inning, then a laser-shot just over the centerfielder’s head in the third.  The 5’10”, 200 lb catcher is a powerful righthanded hitter and has shown solid catch-and-throw skills behind the plate.  He’s committed to Louisiana State now, after originally giving a verbal to Miami.  Despite playing for the losing team, Chinea’s offensive heroics earned him MVP honors for the All-American Classic.

Graybill’s counterpart on the East was lefty Chris Flores (Chaminade HS, FL), who’s headed to Tennessee-Martin.  Flores is a rangy 6’2”, 180-pounder with looseness in his arm and his body.  He’s mostly a finesse guy now, throwing in the low-mid-80s with an advanced change-up and a lot of guile.

He got touched for two runs in the third, thanks to an RBI double by Austin Dean (Klein Collins HS, TX).  Dean took a shoulder-high fastball and tomahawked it deep to left field.  He’s one of the nation’s most impressive righthanded hitting prospects, not many high school kids can generate his kind of bat-speed with wood and still have the looseness to make adjustments with his hands.  The 6’1”, 190 lb Dean has committed early to Texas, will he end up there?

He also made a sparkling defensive play in left, snagging a sure double off the bat of Avery Romero (Menendez HS, FL) in the fourth inning.  The Florida-bound Romero hit a liner to the gap that Dean got a good beat on and made a diving catch.  Dean can run, hit, and field, and has a chance to be a high draft pick in June.

Four more unearned runs were scored against Flores in the third inning, giving the West squad a 6-0 lead that was enough to hold of the East.

Dylan Silva (American Heritage HS, FL) came in relief for Flores.  He’s another south Florida lefty with a good arm.  Silva wasn’t as sharp as he was over the summer.  He threw “only” in the mid-high-80s and he buried a lot of curveballs in the dirt, but still pitched effectively.  The 6’0”, 210-pounder is committed to Florida State.

There were several other prospects with early-round potential next June.  West catcher Clint Coulter (Union HS, WA) is a 6’3”, 230 lb powerhouse with a big swing and good receiving skills.  He’s committed to play at Arizona State.  West shortstop Tanner Rahier (No HS, Palm Desert, CA) has all-around skills including power and a slick glove.  There’s a chance the 6’1”, 200-pounder goes in the first two rounds, but he’s headed to the University of San Diego if he doesn’t sign.

The Inaugural POWER SHOWCASE All-World Classic is being held on Wednesday, December 28th 2011 at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ home to Major League Baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks.
