Coach Don Young

  High School and Club Baseball Coach Donny Young just received his 15 year award for coaching.  A once dominant college pitcher, Young had to undergo surgery to his arm which ended his career in 1986.  He began coaching high school ball in 1995.  In May of 2008 Young was named Arizona Republic Small School Coach of the Year, as well as the AzBCA 1A Coach of the Year in both 2008 and 2010.  In 2011, Young was honored to receive the 2011 AzBCA Jim Phipps Memorial Coach of the Year.  This award named after the late Jim Phipps, acknowledges a coaches accomplishments on the field and well as his outstanding efforts and demonstrated responsibilities in building young men and life skills through the beloved game of baseball. After receiving the award Young was quick to express thanks to his outstanding group of assistant coaches; they consist of Alfred Villegas, Bruce Mills, Ryan Mendoza and Brian Davis.  “They are just much responsible for our winning session as I am, I could not have done it without these guys”.

After winning the State Championship in 2010 Young was interviewed and was asked to comment about his players, “The boys finally started believing in themselves; that was our turning point.   Being their coach gives me opportunities to not only teach them the game of baseball, but to help mold them into fine young men that are willing to strive to achieve everything”, commented Young.

In addition to High School Donny Young along with Frank Tunnel coach the 18U ASBA Club Ball Team.  This partnership began 4 years ago for the two and together they have produced some of the very best baseball players of Arizona.  Some of the team’s accomplishments include winning the state championship for Sandy Koufax and Don Mattingly.
